With a little help from last.fm account I have complied a list of the 20 artists I have listened to the most this past year. Included for each artist will be a picture, a little description of them, why I like the artist, and then finally my favorite track/music video of the artist for this year.
20. Wynter Gordon
Wynter Gordon is from South Jamaica, Queens, New York and an American pop/dance singe and song writer. Her music made its way into my iTunes in June of this year. Most of her music is definitely in the pop category but her lyrics are nothing short of clever. In the US she released her debut EP (With The Music I Die) reaching #25 on the Australian Charts and #4 on the US Dance Charts.

19. Florence + the Machine
Florence + the Machine is the name of this music group. Singer/song-writer Florence Welch (pictured above) is the front woman for the group. Her first album (Between Two Lungs) was added to my iTunes in late January and her second album (Ceremonials) at the end of October. Not only is Florence beautiful (words like ethereal, goddess, quirky, and gorgeous are just some of the few words that spring to mind) but her voice is hauntingly beautiful. It is hauntingly for it is distinct. It is distinct because you cannot believe that that voice comes from this woman. The lyrics of both albums are pure poetry. They are sweet, metaphorical and at times allegorical. Florence Welch is truly an artist who is in touch with her creative, expressive side of writing. Her latest album Ceremonials has already been certified Platinum and Gold in four countries and the album is #43 in the US Rock Albums year-end charts. Here’s hopin’ that 2012 will bring good fortune and even more success to this wonderful group!

18. Katy Perry
Katy Perry, the California Girl from Santa Barbara. 2011 has seen Perry’s success with 5 #1 singles from one album (Teenage Dreams) she has tied the record with Michael Jackson for the same feat. I fell in love with her music with her first album, One of the Boys. It was with this album that the cute, bubbly personality was seen. Teenage Dream, her second album, had its infectious songs but did not seem to capture Katy’s personality. 2012 will be interesting for Katy as her work with Dr. Luke will come to end. Luke will have his own label which Katy is not a part of. Luke was the producer for 5 out of the 6 singles for Perry. Will 2012 mean the end of a Katy Perry dominated American pop chart? Will we see more music like from her album One of the Boys?

17. Tonight Alive
Tonight Alive is a pop-punk bad from Sydney, Australia. Most recently, they have been signed to American music label Fueled by Ramen. The band will re-released their EP Consider This and the album What Are You So Scared Of? I first heard them on the album Punk Goes Pop 4 compilation CD with their cover of Mumford and Sons’ song “Little Lion Man”. What caught my attention was the voice of the lead female singer. I always have a spot in my heart for female pop-punk singers. The pop-punk genre really only finds male lead singers. The members of Tonight Alive are: Jenna McDougall (lead vocals), Whakaio Taahi (lead guitar and backing vocals), Jake Hardy (rhythm guitar), Cam Adler (bass guitar and backing vocals), Matt Best (drums/percussion). I am excited to see what 2012 has in store for this band and hope they find success here in the states.

Robyn found its way to my iTunes in the first month of 2011 but it was not until the mid year that I really started to listen to her. Then, guess what happened? I realized I absolutely love her! What’s funny is that Robyn’s last album was released in 2010. Why did it take until 2011 for me to listen to her? No idea. The Swedish artist has found some success in the States but her success is mostly in the UK and Europe. Most recently Robyn performed on SNL and my personal hope is that gets her some attention from American pop, dance, electronic and trance enthusiasts. I hope in 2012 to see a new album from her and the praise she rightfully deserves (especially, again, here in the States). If there is any music video you have to watch on this list is the one I will post. Not only is the song infectious in its sound but in some ways it shows Robyn quirky and fun personality. The music video may be simple but it left me in awe just for the sheer skills of the light designer. Plus, seeing Robyn just dance and be free is always a fun reason to watch a video.
